de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School Group Photographs
It was the practice for each entry of de Havilland Aeronautical Technical School students to be photographed. The official copies of these apparently no longer exist. Ken Watkins has compiled an album of all those submitted by former students. A low-resolution version of the album, currently Edition 13-1, can be viewed here. (Windows users can left click to open in this window, or right click and select ‘open in new window’.) There are still “missing” group photos and some faces remain unidentified on existing photos. If you were a former student, or a friend or relative, please do look at these images and let us know if you can help. The index to this album is reproduced below for rapid reference.
We also have a growing collection of informal group photos, both old and new. A low-resolution version of this album, currently Edition 13-2 with 21 new photographs added since Edition 12, can be viewed here.
Please note that due to the size of many of the original prints it may be necessary to zoom in or out of the screen image. The albums are available, at cost, on CD to Association members at a much higher resolution than in these on-line versions. Please contact Ken (address and email below) for the current cost, which inevitably increases as postage charges continue to escalate.
Ken is keen to expand further our collection of group photos, whether contemporary or more recent, formal or informal. Either send Ken a good copy (or an original if you are prepared to lend it to him) or a scan at 600 dpi, with black and white photos scanned in grayscale, please (colour in colour, of course!). Scanned files too large to be emailed can be sent on a CD. In whatever format, please send your photos to:

- I was in the 1944 intake at Salisbury Hall, but cannot recall any group photograhs. during my years at Hatfield. Several of my contemporaies went to the US and Canada after completion of their apprenticeships. I remember we designed and built and tested a ramjet engine, fitted on the tip of boomorang shaped helicopter rotor in 1950/51 at Astwick Manor, as well as designing mountings for alternative engines for Chipmunks.

- My time being 49/54 I don't remember once being involved in a group photo shoot, I admit it would have been nice to see the chaps you spent your time with, apparently it was a regular thing particularly for the students at Astwick Manor, anyway it's too late now!

- I was in the January intake of 1957 at Astwick Manor I have no recollection of having my photograph taken in a group. However if if there is anyone who remembers me and has group shot from that time I would appreciate seeing a copy.

- do you have anything about the Astwick Manor 1963 intake (February 1964)? I was there... Reply: We have recently found that in the BAE Systems Archives there is a reference to negatives of two group photos in April 1964, so you may be on one of those. Watch this space!
