History of Red Top and Firestreak – Engineers and Scientists 1945 to 1959

In the 1950s I was employed by de Havilland Propellers, where I carried out some work on Red Top. After many years and several jobs I retired from Teesside University as a Reader in the History of Science and Technology and I am beginning a study history of the experiences of scientists in industry. In particular I am interested in the years immediately following World War II and up to 1959. I have a few contacts with some?? men with whom I worked in Hatfield during those years, but I would like to get in touch with others in order to discover the views of a wider range of people.

If you worked in de Havilland Propellers and Hawker Siddeley in the 1940s and 1950s, or with Fireflash, Firestreak, targets, field trials or the ranges in Aberporth, Woomera or Larkhill, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I was pleased to discovered your web page whilst writing details of my career, as requested by my children. I served with de Havilland for over 10 years, 1943 to 1948 as a DH apprentice and student, then from 1954 when I rejoined DH and in 1955 became Design Group Leader on the Blue Streak re-entry head, where I remained until its cancellation in 1960. I have two group photographs one taken of students in 1946 at Hatfield and another of the re-entry group in 1960. Please let me know if further details would be of any interest Regards Alan Mann If you want to contact Alan, please use the Enquiry Form on the "Contact Us" page and we will forward your message to him.
