Hatfield Memories, by Dick Whittingham

In 2008 Richard (Dick) Whittingham kindly agreed to let us publish some of his memories of de Havilland and Hatfield. This article records his reminiscences about the Moth Minor, the Mosquito, the Vampire and Geoffrey de Havilland junior. More items were added in 2009. Dick died on 23rd April 2010, soon after sending us another item, A Day to Remember, now added to the compilation.

Does anyone remember my grandfather Albert Hatfield? He was an inspector at DH Hatfield, having moved from Stag Lane. He lived in Holme Road, Hatfield. My Mother and I (I was born there in 1941) lived with him (he died in 1959) until 1948 when my father returned from War. My grandfather however gave me my great love of airplanes that I still hold today especially DH aircraft.

Splendid; nice to see the chaps remembering their working lives and raising interesting events, sometimes familiar. I know of a group of events, being in the development and experimental test side of it ! Roy Young.

Not forgetting the test site at Hatfield where the test bed on which the great Gyron Senior was running. Fuel tankers were queuing up to keep up with the demand of the beast! And on 14 bed the re-heat nozzle retaining bolts literally tore through their holes and the whole nozzle finished up down the end of the detuner.

A great site. I am trying to make contact with the memory of William Ernest Hosking who was a chief engineer for de Havilland during WWll. Any link would be appreciated, he was based in Grosvenor House, St Albans. Many thanks. NOTE: Responses should be made using the Enquiry Form link (last paragraph on the "Contact Us" page). We will pass them on to Fred.

It is with great sadness that I must post here that my Grandfather; Dick Whittingham, passed away this morning. It gave him great pleasure to have his memories published here. Thank you all for your kind feedback.

Gentlemen, Does anybody remember my Uncle Stanley Thomas Edward People? He was, I believe, de Havilland's 'man in South Africa' from about 1930 to 1939. He was killed in an air crash, somewhere in Africa, In 1938/9. Any help would be much appreciated!! Terry. Replies made via "Contact us" will be forwarded to Terry.

People who worked or visited Hatfield during its aviation years may find this website brings back a few memories. http://www.hatfield-herts.co.uk/aviationandaerospace.html Warning: it may upset some - Hatfield, sadly, hasn't left the airfield intact but more buildings have survived here than at Stag Lane.

I am trying to locate Dave Owlett or any other mates who attended the deHavilland Aeronautical Technical School with me from 1946-1952. Thank you. Note: anyone wishing to contact Kenneth can do so by using the Enquiry Form link on our "Contact Us" page. We will pass any messages on to him.

My father, Rex King, was the manager of the experimental shop mentioned in Dick Whittingham's Hatfield Memories. He managed the building of the prototype Comet and many other prototypes. Does anyone have any memories of Rex King that they could share?

Those were the days ! What memories to treasure and what wonderful experiences. Thank goodness Dick saved his diary entries. Very well done indeed.

What a treasure trove of memories! Thanks to Dick for sharing. Regards, Dave P.S. I'd better declare a slight bias!

I stumbled on Dick's memories, is he still around? I was a trade school apprentice 1938 to 1944 so I am not eligible for membership. I knew Dick from early days as we shared a liking for music also later on we were both members of the photo society. A great guy! During my year in the trade school we did a lot of work on the 94 and a bit on the TK5. WEBMASTER'S NOTE: All apprentices of that era are eligible for membership!
