Apprentice Display at DH Aircraft Museum

In the Foreman`s Office at the DH Museum, Colney Heath, there is a display of training exercises by de Havilland apprentices and information about the Technical School. This pdf describes the display. It gives a partial catalogue of apprentice training exercises, including different designs of the wooden toolboxes we all made – many still in use! It also illustrates artefacts retained by their proud owners. Right click the link if you prefer to open the pdf in a new browser tab.

I've just happened across the display catalogue, although not eligible for membership, I did my time at the apprentice training school in 1980-81 as part of my HND at Hatfield Poly I also lived in the newly refurbished accommodation adjacent to the training school. I still have many of my apprentice pieces, including the spinner, oil can, tin can with lid, funnel, lightening box section, engineers clamp, tap and die holders and fitting pieces - happy memories.
Thanks for commenting, Chris. The refurbished accommodation was a great improvement on the cells at my time there in 1957. Our son went there in 1982 and the new study bedrooms were good. Look after your handiwork! Roger de Mercado.

01 Dec 16 11:06. My toolbox, die holder, tap wrench and other tools like those in the display remain in use 60 years later! Having done well at woodwork at school my toolbox-making benefitted and I discovered that if you were good at woodwork you were able (and allowed) to make a third drawer for your toolbox. That I also made wooden drawer handles may have seemed a bit precious, but they still look the part! Thanks Allan. We look forward to a photo of your toolbox! RdeM
